Tricycles Information

You've been itching to buy your toddler his first tricycle, but how do you know whether his motor skills are developed enough so that he can ride safely? Balance, coordination, and leg strength are important to riding a bike, and these skills start to develop at an early age with use of rocking toys. Children that climb stairs without favoring one leg, and children able to walk, run, and jump without assistance have strength and balance needed to operate a tricycle.

Toddlers are usually ready to take to the sidewalks with their trikes at 24-32 months of age. Learning to push down on the pedals takes body coordination, and steering requires a combination of body responses and the child's ability to see and evaluate what lies ahead. Parents can be strong coaches in the learning stages of riding. From the first riding lesson, parents must stress safety. Children should never ride tricycles barefooted or while wearing flip-flops, and they should always wear a riding helmet.

Purchasing that first tricycle is a milestone for parents and children. It's a time when children strive to achieve and shine in their parents' eyes, and a time when parents live vicariously through their kids. The experience begins with selecting the right tricycle for the child.

Tricycles FAQ's

So you think a tricycle is just a toy & something that all the other kids have & something that you had and now, so should your toddler. Close your eyes and think back to when you got your first tricycle, and all the ways it made you happy & peddling down the sidewalk for all you were worth.

Tricycles Guide

When you purchase your child his first tricycle, purchase a helmet and instill in your child the first rule of tricycle and bicycle safety: always wear a helmet. Children one-year old and younger should not wear helmets, which means they should not ride outdoor trikes or ride on the back of parents' bikes. These young children do not have the neck strength to safely wear a helmet. Remember, tricycle and bicycle safety should never be an option.
